There is a beautiful story. A small boy is watching the struggle of a butterfly to come out of its cocoon. It was struggling hard and hard but the cocoon could not break. The little boy felt concerned and wanted to help the insect to come out of the shell. He snipped the cocoon and the butterfly easily emerged out of it. The little boy felt very happy as he helped the insect. The butterfly had a swollen body and small wrinkled wings. He expected that after some time the body would shrink and the wings would enlarge enough to support the butterfly to fly. But nothing happened, the butterfly could not fly. The boy felt very disappointed and asked his father about this event. His father told him that by snipping the cocoon, he had not helped the insect because the struggle is a natural process by which the wings get stronger. Without struggle the butterfly would never fly.
Actually, this is not a story, it is a true incident. In the last twenty years, the practice of birth of human babies through cesarean delivery has increased. According to the data collected by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare under the Health Management Information system over 14 percent of the total births took place through a C-section around 19 lakh births out of the total 1.3 Crore & in public hospitals. It was less than half a decade ago.
I am saying this in perspective of the increasing depression and suicides of our young generation. The baby who has not faced the natural struggle of taking birth, how he/she can survive through life. I have not done proper research but when I came across any such case I randomly asked the parents about the child’s birth process and I found that the children who took birth through cesarean delivery are generally not able to face the challenges of life. In contrast, I have seen that children who are premature and survive are very strong and intelligent. I think that their struggle of survival is more intensive than a normal one.
In this article, I don’t want to debate about the pros and cons of caesarean deliveries or whether to go for cesarean deliveries or not. There are so many other factors that are responsible for depression and suicides. I just want to give you awareness about the fact that the process of taking birth contributes a lot to one’s personality. So, if not necessary, please don’t try to abandon this natural struggle to come into being.
